Pocahontas
In 1609, endeavoring to expand the colony deeper into Virginia, Capt. John Smith traveled up the James River to its falls. During the night as he lay sleeping on the boat headed back to Jamestown, a container of gun powder exploded. Smith’s body was engulfed in flesh-melting flames. To save himself, he dove into the water. Had the event occurred today, Capt. Smith would have emerged from the river to see Richmond, Virginia perched upon its shore.
